The Cavalier Doberman Pinscher Club is under the sponsorship of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, and through them, the AKC. This discussion will be primarily about how to read an AKC pedigree.
An official AKC pedigree has to have an AKC seal affixed to the lower left-hand corner!
If you purchase an AKC Registered puppy, your puppy’s three-generation pedigree will look something like this (this is an approximation for educational purposes):

For simplicity, the above example only includes information for the Sire. The information in addition to the name of the Sire (YOUR PUPPY’S SIRE being the name) would also be available for each dog in the pedigree with two possible exceptions—the OFA24G and the CERF38. The various type colors are strictly for explanatory purposes and would not be on an actual AKC pedigree.
RED letters are titles. For AKC titles, click here or go to “About Titles”.
GREEN letter/number combinations are the registration numbers. Each dog has a unique registration number.
ORANGE is not the month and year of birth, but rather the date the dog was entered into the Stud Book. The Stud Book is a compendium of all the dogs that have been bred.
PURPLE letters/numbers like OFA24G, will only be in the pedigree if the owner of that dog had him or her evaluated for hip dysplasia. The 24 indicates the dog was 2 years old when evaluated (24 months) and the G means the dog was rated as having “good” hips.
PINK letters and numbers – CERF38 indicates that this dog was free of eye problems at the age of 3 years and 2 months.
NAVY is the color of that particular dog.
